Chester FC has announced the renaming of their West Stand to "The Mike Metcalf Stand," honouring a true club legend. Mike Metcalf, an inductee of the club's Hall of Fame, made 221 Football League appearances for Chester and was a key member of the 'Famous Five' forward line that each scored more than 20 goals in all competitions during the 1964/65 season.
Known affectionately as 'Micky', the Liverpool-born Metcalf grew up in Saltney and joined Chester in December 1963 for a then-record fee of £5,000. His dynamic and skilful attacking play quickly endeared him to fans during his six-year spell at Sealand Road. After his playing career, Metcalf remained an active member of the Chester Former Players Association until his passing in 2018 at the age of 79.
The stand sponsorship comes from Metlab Supplies Ltd, the business Metcalf established in 1984, now run by his sons Barry and Ian. This gesture ensures a lasting tribute to a player who embodied the spirit of Chester FC.
Ian Metcalf expressed his pleasure at being able to support the club while honouring his father's memory. He highlighted Mike's deep connection to Chester, from supporting the club in his youth to playing for the team and maintaining ties after retirement. Ian also praised the match day experience at Chester FC, emphasising how important the club has become to him and his family.
Chester FC General Manager Albert Davies described the renaming as a fitting tribute to a Chester great, appreciating the support of the Metcalf family. He also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing stand sponsor, Swettenham Chemists, who had supported the club for eight years.
Metlab Supplies Ltd, a family-run business, operates as an independent supplier of laboratory consumables and chemicals, servicing the entire UK from their warehouse on the North Wales/Cheshire border.
This renaming not only honours a club legend but also strengthens the ties between Chester FC and one of its most beloved players, ensuring Mike Metcalf's legacy continues to inspire future generations of Chester fans.
