A remarkable piece of football history is set to be preserved in an upcoming documentary that chronicles an extraordinary 1967 charity match in Liverpool, where Hungarian football legend Ferenc Puskás played alongside local stars. The film, currently seeking crowdfunding support, will be directed by Daniel Metcalf, grandson of Chester FC striker Mike Metcalf, who shared the pitch with Puskás during this historic encounter alongside icons such as Billy Liddell and John Charles.

“I want to craft a love letter to the beautiful game," says director Daniel Metcalf. “The film will be a testament to the power of community, unexpected connections, and the unifying force of sport. Through personal anecdotes, historical footage, and expert interviews, we'll explore not only this remarkable match but also the broader context of 1960s football and how the sport has evolved over half a century since."

The project has already garnered significant support, including:

  • Cooperation from Chester FC with access to their archives and facilities
  • Endorsements from football legends including Neville Southall
  • A talented production team including experienced photographers T-Jey Williams and Sam Thomas
  • Narration by international sports broadcaster Kim Thomas
  • Support from key football historians and journalists

The crowdfunding campaign offers various tiers of support, from £10 acknowledgments to exclusive £5,000 Producer credits. Rewards include film credits but also more creative rewards such as special edition recreated match programmes replicating the look and feel of the originals, signed film posters and invitations to the film’s UK premiere.

The project has set an initial funding goal of £3,300 to cover essential production costs, with stretch goals that would enable enhanced production value through professional equipment, expanded filming locations, and high-quality animation for match recreation.

Filming is scheduled to begin in Chester during May 2025, with a targeted completion date of early 2026 for the festival circuit.
